Supercrawl Named Tourism Event of the Year

Tourism Event of the Year

Hamilton’s Supercrawl festival is a success story of explosive grassroots growth in a city tapping into the creative energy of its arts sector — and it’s not just locals taking notice. On November 10, 2015, the closing night of the annual Ontario Tourism Summit, Supercrawl was honoured to receive the 2015 Ontario Tourism Award of Excellence for Tourism Event of the Year. The award is sponsored by the Tourism Industry Association of Ontario.

“From the outset, Supercrawl has always promoted local artists, businesses and neighbourhoods far beyond the city’s borders, so this distinction is a reflection on them as much as us,” said Tim Potocic, Festival Director of Supercrawl. “It’s a real honour, and great to have confirmation that Supercrawl is on the provincial radar in a big way.”

“More than anything, it’s rewarding to see local teamwork and talent acknowledged,” Potocic added. “We’re dedicated to setting the bar high and putting on a great event every year, but none of that would be possible without the power of partnerships, so we really share this honour with all of Hamilton. We’ve got ambitious things planned for 2016 and beyond, and this award will inspire us to keep dreaming big.”

A driven team of Hamilton artists and community builders founded Supercrawl in 2009 out of a desire to expand on the promise of James Street North’s monthly Art Crawl. Showcasing an entire street of cultural experiences — a dynamic lineup of music, art fashion, performance, talks, crafts, food and fun - the free urban festival has captured the imagination of audiences far beyond the city. Along the way, it has become a mainstay of area tourism, averaging crowds of over 130,000 and economic impact of over $10 million annually. Recognition has followed: Earlier in 2015 Festival and Events Ontario named Supercrawl one of the province’s Top 100 festivals.

As the province’s premier tourism conference, the Ontario Tourism Summit gathers destination marketers, tourism associations, tour operators and business owners opportunities and offers them the opportunity to absorb the latest trends, connect with colleagues and share best practices. Announced on the Summit’s closing night, the Ontario Tourism Awards are both a celebration of successes province-wide and an opportunity to recognize those who have made significant contributions to Ontario’s tourism industry.

The Tourism Industry Association of Ontario (TIAO) is recognized as the umbrella organization for leading associations, destination marketing organizations, regional tourism organizations and businesses serving Ontario’s diverse tourism industry. Collectively representing 150,000 businesses and 359,000 employees dedicated to operating and promoting the province’s powerful tourism infrastructure, TIAO provides a strong, unified voice for the sector and advocates the importance of tourism to all levels of government in order to help the industry grow and prosper.
