Deadline for Submissions: Friday April 21, 2017, 4pm EST

A driven team of Hamilton artists and community builders founded Supercrawl in 2009 out of a desire to expand on the promise of James Street North’s monthly Art Crawl. Showcasing great music alongside an entire street of cultural experiences — a diverse and dynamic lineup of music, art, fashion, performance, talks, crafts, food and fun (local, regional national and international) — the festival has captured the imagination of culture lovers far beyond the city. The event has gone from a one-day celebration on a single city block to a weekend-long experience spanning more than a dozen blocks, with attendance growing steadily from 3,000 to 200,000 in that time. In 2016, Supercrawl expanded the festival’s physical footprint (covering 16 city blocks) as well as its programming and production ambitions, and will build upon that foundation yet again in 2017.

What Are We Looking For?

Theatre and Performing Arts have rarely been presented at Supercrawl outside of the festival’s signature large-scale circus arts piece by Circus Orange, and the occasional intervention-based piece as part of the visual arts programming. Supercrawl 2017 will be the festival’s pilot year of integrating live theatre and performing arts as its own section in the event. Theatre and Performing Arts will differentiate itself from other Supercrawl disciplines (performance art, music, dance) by being projects performed by live artists where the focus of the work is narrative, experiential and time-based. Organizers are seeking 3-5 new site-specific works created specifically for Supercrawl. The works will be short (5-8 mins) and performed repeatedly throughout the day, or epic durational works taking place over the full day. All performances will occur on Saturday, September 9 from 11am to 10pm.

Fees & Resources

Supercrawl will pay each artist/artist team $1,500 for the engagement. Artists will also have access to a Technical Director to assist with staging, lighting and technical aspirations but the expectation is that the works are low-tech. Artists will also have access to the Theatre Section volunteers to assist in pre-festival planning (sourcing materials, connecting with local specialists, etc.), as well as volunteers to assist with simple tasks (i.e. gathering a crowd, turning on a light, turning on sound, etc.). Supercrawl will also be putting significant resources behind promoting the event and selected artists leading up to the festival, and during the event. Supercrawl will provide Theatre Section signage, include programming in printed materials, and on the Supercrawl website. Audiences would be estimated at approximately 50,000 to 75,000 people over the duration of the performance day.

Dates & Location

All performances will take place on Saturday, September 9 between 11am and 10pm. All performances will take place on James Street North, between Robert and Cannon. Supercrawl will work with selected artists to choose a location and gain permission from the property owner if a building is selected as opposed to just open street space. Supercrawl will provide adequate storage space for artists personal belongs during performance hours, and for production materials pre/post performance.

Submission Requirements

(1) CV of Artist or Artist Team (max 2 pages);

(2) Description of your practice or approach to developing site-specific works (max 2 pages). Please include whether you would perform a short work multiple times, or a long-format work over a full day; and

(3) 2-3 links to examples of your work (video/photo documentation, written reviews, etc.)
