Màdjità: Indigenous Stories & Design

Màdjità: Indigenous Stories & Design will be featured in the Fashion Zone of this year’s Supercrawl in Hamilton, ON. The meaning of Màdjità is “to proceed to perform the first or earliest part of some action; to commence or start.” This feature will bring us back to the start of the creative process of design. Cha Nimke Nagwagin Kwe, also known as Jasmin Glaw (Visual Artist, Facilitator, Hamilton/Algonquins of Pikwakanagan), will host four Indigenous panelists, Jodi Lynn Maracle Kanien'keha, Teyotsihstokwathe Dakota Brant (Six Nations, Artist, Facilitator & Entrepreneur), Teyonehrahtawènrye Ashley Maracle (Artist, Hamilton/ Tyendinaga) and Somer Johnston (Artist, Neyaashiinigmiing/Toronto), to speak to their journey in using traditional stories, as well as historical impacts of colonization to inform their work in fashion, design and the arts.  Participants will leave with a greater understanding of the creative process of translating stories into works of clothing, textiles and design. In addition, it is the hope that this panel will generate a stronger awareness of Indigenous designers; and, an informed approach toward engaging in cultural appreciation and ditching cultural appropriation.
