AIFEC Instrument Petting Zoo

If you were at Supercrawl last year and heard an orchestra that sounded like it was tuning all day, odds are you were actually just passing by An Instrument for Every Child’s Instrument Petting Zoo! Come out to the AIFEC booth in the Meridian Family Zone and try out new musical instrument under the guidance of local musicians: play an acoustic bass, try out a variety of exotic percussion instruments and learn how to create a sound on the trombone, flute, saxophone, trumpet and clarinet!

The AIFEC Instrument Petting Zoo has established itself as one of the Hamilton Music Collective’s most popular outreach activities. AIFEC is led by the Hamilton Music Collective in partnership with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board. Inspired by similar work in Germany and El Sistema in Venezuela, it began as a pilot project in September 2010 at King George Elementary School (77 Gage Ave. N., Hamilton), where students in Grades 1 to 4 learned to play a musical instrument and receiveed general music education within the Ontario school curriculum. The long-term vision for the program is to have it grow, so that every child in Hamilton is part of AIFEC.
