Jeremie Albino

There’s no counting the worlds Jeremie Albino has travelled to get to where he is today, and no telling which ones he might head to next. Born and raised in the bright and booming metropolis of Toronto, his heart led him out of the city and into Prince Edward County, where country living and a decade of working on farms gave him the time and space to hone his songwriting skills. His music nods to all manner of troubadours who rambled down similar paths throughout history—he nods slyly to the legendary blues singers who inspired him, offers a soft and insightful touch with his folk songs, and stomps and swaggers through soulful rock ‘n’ roll. But Jeremie Albino is a natural and an original, created by an alchemy that favours, above all else, that most mysterious and coveted of qualities: heart. Albino’s wildly impressive debut, Hard Time, overflows with it. The sagas of out-sized characters and the vivid imagery they pass through are given proper treatment by the peaks and valleys of Albino’s music, dynamic enough to conjure something light as the sway of flowers in the wind, or the grandeur of an apocalyptic storm. “They’re stories I wrote that came from daydreams,” Jeremie explains, “about life, love, people, and another time.” Hard Time represents a slew of firsts for the young songwriter. Before embarking on the recording, he’d never been in a studio, played with a band, or worked with a producer. Jeremie’s earthy Americana has never been laid to tape until now. And Hard Time sounds just as untouched by pretension as you’d expect from a musician who got to this point simply by letting his heart lead the way. The first recordings were laid down at the Bombshelter in Nashville with producer Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes, Hurray For The Riff Raff, Langhorne Slim), and the rest was finished off at Union Sound in Toronto with Crispin Day.

Originally from London, UK, LTtheMonk first fell in love with hip-hop at just eight years old, when the music captivated his young ears and ignited what would become a lifelong passion. Blended with constant exposure to reggae (via his Jamaican mother) and rock (via his Irish father), LT’s adventurous love of music and performing onstage would only grow stronger. That eclectic musical upbringing, coupled with discovering the music of Michael Jackson and becoming obsessed with the pop icon’s music and dancing in parallel with his foundational hip hop exposure, set LT off on a journey to becoming a musician himself. It’s also an intrinsic part of LT’s toolkit, with bantamweight Gene Kelly-meets-James Brown footwork and immaculate sport socks both indelible signatures of his persona as an entertainer. LT has since carved a reputation as a vibrant and compelling talent, and his standing is destined to grow with the release of his new album, On The Wall (out August 20, 2021 on Sonic Unyon Records). The next step in his artistic evolution, the full-length honours ancestors even as it points toward alternate futures, and is further evidence of the artist’s ambition to push hip-hop forward.

JUNO award-winning artists iskwē and Tom Wilson (Junkhouse, Lee Harvey Osmond, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings) release their new single “Blue Moon Drive” featuring trumpeter Chuck Copenace with Red Music Rising. The song was recorded live off the floor with an incredible group of musicians from Jukasa Studios in Six Nations, ON. The magic of trumpeter Copenace sprinkling in his notes, fluttering in the air, in space, and contributing a different breath to the song was all captured in Winnipeg. The single is an incredible collaboration of not only three amazing artists, but also the celebration of four Indigenous nations uniting together to celebrate their art – iskwē (Cree, Métis), Tom (Mohawk), and Chuck (Ojibway). The collaboration began as a gig at the 2020 Indspire Awards. “We happened to be asked to perform together at the Indspire Awards in Ottawa,” Wilson shares. “We had never sung together so until we actually stepped up to the microphone and started to sing we didn’t know that we had a little bit of magic going on between us.” “We are able to now share that magic with you,” iskwē adds. “It is a beautiful song, and it was a nice way to find our footing with us. The song was written a while ago, and it had its home. Now it has a new home, and it feels very much like a new energy has been infused into it. This is just the beginning!”

The artist’s intimate voice, personal lyrics, and unique song structures offer a signature spin on her R&B/Soul/Jazz/Funk roots. Nuela Charles

Three-time JUNO Award-nominated Nuela Charles is an alternative/soul singer-songwriter known for her soulful vocals and captivating stage presence, solidifying herself as a Canadian music staple. Born in Kenya, raised in Switzerland, Canada and the Bahamas before settling back in Canada, Charles’ music is infused with her multicultural upbringing, giving a fresh and diverse flair to her sound. Charles’ latest single “Space” came out of a writing session with multi-platinum/ diamond record producer Don Mills (Giveon, Snoh Allegra, Juice WRLD, and more) and was completed by JUNO-nominated producer/mixer Ryan Worsley, who brought life to the track and took it to the next level. The groove-laden tune is a lightning bolt, honest response to the notion that you just need space to salvage the momentary love turmoil. The things we need to do, we don’t want to do — and “Space” narrates just that. Knowing you need space from your other half but wanting anything but that.  Charles has brought her distinct voice to various stages over the last several years – having performed notably at Reeperbahn Festival in Germany, making her UK debut in London, and making her U.S. debut at the coveted “It’s A School Night” by personal invitation by tastemaker and KCRW radio host Chris Douridas. Over the last year, she has shared the stage as direct support for some of Canada’s musical icons – including Sam Roberts Band, Jann Arden and Stars. With a nod from tastemaker The FADER, placements on the hit shows Jane the Virgin and Tiny Pretty Things plus some comfortable real estate on the CBC Music charts, Charles is ready to release more of her fiery brand of cinematic soul.

Cadence Weapon is Edmonton-born, Toronto-based rapper, producer, writer and poet Rollie Pemberton. The son of a pioneering hip-hop radio DJ, Pemberton grew up around a diverse library of music. Splitting his time between Edmonton’s experimental electronic and underground rap scenes as a teenager, Pemberton eventually developed a hybrid of both styles. Cadence Weapon has released four albums, all of which have been nominated for the Polaris Prize, with Breaking Kayfabe (2006) and Hope In Dirt City (2012) being shortlist nominees. Pemberton has toured extensively following the success of these albums, playing festivals like Glastonbury, Lollapalooza, Pitchfork Music Festival, Roskilde and Primavera Sound and performing shows with artists such as Public Enemy, Diplo, Questlove, De La Soul and many more. Pemberton’s music is known for pairing groundbreaking production with incisive, socially conscious lyricism. Pemberton served as Poet Laureate of Edmonton from 2009 to 2011, making him the literary ambassador of his hometown. His poem “The Garden” was incorporated into a bronze sculpture at the Alberta Legislature Grounds in Edmonton in 2018. Pemberton was the narrator and a writer for the VICELAND television series PAYDAY and Mister Tachyon and he has hosted lectures and conducted live interviews for CBC q and Red Bull Music Academy. Pemberton is writing a book about his career called Bedroom Rapper that will be published by McClelland & Stewart in Fall 2022, following on the heels of his new album Parallel World, which has been long-listed for the 2021 Polaris Music Prize. Using elements of trap, drill, grime and acid house, Cadence touches on themes of systemic racism, structural inequality, police profiling, gentrification, the internet’s pervasive effects on our lives and the surveillance state.

PRE-TAPED STREAM TO BE RECORDED LIVE AUGUST 24, 2021

Catherine MacLellan, one of Canadian folk music’s true gems, returns with her anticipated seventh album, Coyote. This self-produced release is a travelogue through heartbreak, loss and the joy of life. Coyote contains 14 songs that are reflective, poignant and hopeful. They were all recorded and produced by Catherine at her home studio in PEI. “It’s a dream home, a big old farm house with a long history of music,” she says. “In the early days, there were big kitchen parties, with someone always rocking the piano and people square dancing. When I moved here, I really got the sense the house wanted things to be happening, and music to be played.” Coyote adds some of that traditional East Coast instrumentation of accordions, fiddles and bouzouki. The songs touch on themes of change, vulnerability, and letting yourself be seen; the good, the bad, the pretty, and the ugly. The past four years have been a busy and important time for Catherine, she set aside her own songwriting to celebrate the life and legacy of her late legendary father, Gene MacLellan. During this time, she recorded and released the album, If It’s Alright With You: The Songs of Gene MacLellan; produced a stage show by the same name; and an award winning documentary, The Song and the Sorrow – all in tribute to him. Gene MacLellan is recognized as one of Canada’s most celebrated songwriters with worldwide hits, including “Snowbird” (made famous by Anne Murray and later covered by Elvis Presley) and “Put Your Hand in the Hand” by Ocean. Though the acclaim for Catherine’s own work was already significant, it reached new levels when she took home a Juno Award in 2015 for her standout album, The Raven’s Sun. This was an intimate look into her musical work with long-time collaborator, Chris Gauthier. Catherine has also been recognized with multiple East Coast Music Awards, Canadian Folk Music Awards, and Music PEI Awards.

Athanase

Athanase (pronounced ATH-an-ouse) is a modern folk-rock band out of Hamilton, Ontario, whose music “is as eternal as their name is unique” (Y108). The band’s moniker is Greek for “immortal” — fitting for a band that uses songs to tell stories that transcend generations. They gracefully bend genres, combining Americana, alternative, ’50s rock n roll, and country to create an emotional yet energetic experience. “We’ve been called ‘modern folk’, and I think that’s because we put on a fun live show – like the energy from a 1950’s rock n roll concert – while still keeping true to the elements we love from folk,” says Athanase singer/songwriter Jason Baronette. Their debut EP, Times Like These, garnered radio play and opportunities to play alongside Irish sensation Hermitage Green. Their second release, Between II Shores, featured the track “Wolves” which is as thought-provoking as it is rocking. Immortal, the band’s forthcoming 2021 EP, was recorded in part with Mickey Ellsworth (Walk Off The Earth, Ascot Royals) and mixed by Andrew Billone (Arkells, Golden Feather). The continued evolution of their sound can be largely attributed to the group’s new rhythm section which features Zach Symak and Konrad Swierczek on drums and bass respectively. Baronette’s poetically charged songwriting is perfectly juxtaposed with Sweet Jake Langstaff adding even grittier blues-rock guitar. While their sound is unique, listen and you’ll quickly find they do not hide their influences. Their sound can be attributed to their love of artists from Americana giants such as Jason Isbell, The Decemberists and Bright Eyes, to Canadian heroes The Tragically Hip, and even pop icon Taylor Swift.
